first time visiting rocky point
If this is your first time visiting Rocky Point, here is some helpful information to make your trip more enjoyable!
What is “Rocky Point”?
Puerto Peñasco, also known to most as “Rocky Point” is the closest beach to people who live in Arizona.
How long does it take to get to Rocky Point?
The average travel time from Phoenix to Rocky Point is typically between 4 to 5 hours. However, actual travel times can vary depending on the day, time of day, and the season. For those planning to arrive on Friday afternoon or Saturday, we advise anticipating a wait at the US/Mexico border. During peak times, wait times can range from 5 minutes to several hours, especially on holiday weekends. To monitor real-time traffic conditions, you can check “Lukeville, Arizona” on Google Maps and enable ‘Traffic’ notifications. For instance, current conditions show a minimal wait at the border, likely taking only a few minutes.
How can I fly to Rocky Point?
Rocky Point currently does not have an international airport, so the easiest way to get there is to fly to Phoenix, Arizona, and drive down.
How do I drive to Encantame Towers?
Google Maps, Waze and Apple Maps all have directions to Encantame Towers. Just put “Encantame Towers” in the navigation bar, turn on the music, and enjoy. If you’d like to go over the route early, you can do so here.
Please note that the driving directions take you to the security gate at Encantame Towers. Once you pass the security gate, you will continue to drive south for 3 miles to the actual condo, which is alongside the ocean.
What is required to drive down to Rocky Point?
When traveling in Mexico, it’s mandatory to have Mexican vehicle insurance. American insurance policies do not cover accidents in Mexico, and you may face fines from local authorities if you’re caught without Mexican car insurance. Fortunately, purchasing insurance is straightforward—you can buy it online (we recommend BajaBound) or from various shops in Why, Ajo, and Lukeville before reaching the border. Insurance is typically available on a daily basis and costs between $10 to $30 per day.
Can I take a rental car to Rocky Point?
Check with your rental car company first! Most rental companies prohibit their vehicles from going into Mexico.
What do I need to do at the border?
At the border, you’ll encounter a red/green light. Once it turns green, proceed slowly. If Mexican officials want to search your vehicle, they’ll instruct you to park. While many officials may not speak fluent English, their instructions are generally clear. In case of uncertainty, you can always use ‘Google Translate’ on your phone to communicate with them.

What can’t I bring into Mexico?
Here are items prohibited when crossing into Mexico:
- Any type of weapon or ammunition
- Electronic cigarettes (vapes)
- Narcotics
- Fireworks
- Pork, poultry, or beef
- More than $10,000 in cash
Mexico enforces strict policies regarding weapons. Even a single piece of ammunition can lead to lengthy imprisonment. If you typically carry weapons in your vehicle or on your person, please ensure you have thoroughly checked to avoid any unintentional violations before crossing the border.
Do I need to speak Spanish to go to Rocky Point?
While it’s polite to try speaking the local language, many locals in this tourist destination understand that most visitors speak English. As a result, many will make an effort to communicate with you in English. You can certainly navigate without knowing any Spanish, but it’s advisable to have Google Translate on your phone in case you encounter any communication challenges.
Speed Limit in Sonoyta
Firstly, the speed limits are posted in kilometers per hour (KMH), not miles per hour (MPH). After crossing the US/Mexico border, you’ll pass through the small town of Sonoyta. Pay close attention to the speed limit signs in this town and adhere strictly to them. Unlike in the United States, there is no customary leeway of “5 MPH.” When a sign indicates 20 KMH, it means precisely that—approximately 12 MPH. While this might feel slow, it’s important to observe these limits. Locals may appear impatient, but it’s safest to maintain the specified speed while passing through town.
Why do Mexican officials carry rifles everywhere?
If you’re new to Mexico, seeing military trucks with armed officials carrying rifles might be unsettling. However, these measures are in place for your safety, and the officials are there to protect you. There is no need to feel intimidated or afraid of their presence.
Why do the police always have their red and blue lights on?
Unlike in the United States, Mexican police officers may have their red and blue lights on during regular patrols. This can be confusing, but it’s a common practice. If they are trying to pull you over for a traffic violation, they will clearly signal you using their siren or loudspeaker. If unsure of what to do, you can always safely pull over to the side of the road.
Can I drink the water in Rocky Point?
You might have heard advice against drinking water in Rocky Point. At Encantame Towers, we provide filtered water and have our own reverse osmosis (R/O) system in our condo, ensuring that the water inside our units—and the ice in our refrigerators—is safe to drink. However, if you’re outside the resort area, I recommend avoiding tap water. When dining out, it’s best to request bottled water with your meal for peace of mind.
Is the ocean safe to swim in?
Yes, generally speaking. However, it’s important to be aware of a few things about the ocean:
- Depending on the season, jellyfish and stingrays may be present near the shore. It’s advisable to use the “stingray shuffle” when entering the ocean.
- Riptides can occur. It’s crucial to know how to respond if caught in one and to avoid fighting against the current.
- Be mindful of boats and jet skis in the ocean, and avoid venturing too far from shore.
Lastly, always supervise young children closely when they are in the ocean and never leave them unattended. The ocean is stunning but can pose risks if not respected.
How do I pay for things? Do I need to exchange dollars into Pesos?
Encantame Resorts accepts credit cards for all transactions. However, smaller restaurants outside of the resort area may only accept cash. While they do accept US dollars, paying in pesos often offers a better exchange rate, ensuring you get more value for your money. Additionally, when receiving change, it’s common to receive pesos rather than dollars. Local banks like BBVA allow you to withdraw pesos directly, making it convenient to obtain local currency.
